About GM / Chevrolet Engines
General Motors has produced some of the most iconic American engines. The Duramax diesel, developed with Isuzu, has been the backbone of GM's heavy-duty truck lineup since 2001. The small-block V8 family, including Vortec and LS engines, represents decades of engineering excellence and remains one of the most popular engine platforms worldwide.
The Duramax 6.6L diesel was born from a partnership between GM and Isuzu, with the first LB7 variant debuting in 2001 Silverado and Sierra HD trucks. Each subsequent generation — LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, and the current L5P — brought improvements in power, emissions compliance, and reliability. The LBZ (2006-2007) is widely considered the most desirable generation for its combination of power and pre-DPF simplicity. GM's small-block V8 lineage stretches back to 1955, evolving through the Vortec era (1996-2013) and into the modern Gen V direct-injected engines. The LS engine family, spanning LS1 through LS9, became the most popular engine swap platform in automotive history due to its compact size, light weight, and enormous power potential.
GM / Chevrolet Engine Buying Guide
When purchasing a remanufactured GM engine, identifying the correct RPO code is essential. GM uses Regular Production Option codes to distinguish between engine variants — for example, the 5.3L Vortec comes in LM7, L59, LM4, and other variants with different features. For Duramax diesels, the generation code (LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, L5P) determines compatibility. Your VIN's 8th digit identifies the engine code. For truck applications, verify whether your vehicle uses a flex-fuel (E85) compatible engine, as this affects the fuel system components included in the remanufactured unit.
